I disconnected my own Google Home units over two years ago and as someone with ADHD, it's been a challenge. I've recently discovered Home Assistant, and I am thinking it might be the best alternative.

(Adding link for the curious: home-assistant.io/)

@angiebaby I've seen some people talk about this.

Might do some digging myself.

@majorlinux

Here is the complete current list of integrations. I've been trying to see if this may be a solution for a relative as well who has her entire home set up for Amazon Echo. We were able to find something for everything except for her brand of ceiling fans an an electric fireplace.

@angiebaby @majorlinux It seems to be the best option, but it's also horrifically overcomplicated and gatekept by some of the crankiest YAML bros I've encountered anywhere. I say this as someone with 30 years of data, software, and IT architecture experience.

@wcbdata @majorlinux

My needs are super-few. Mainly I just need a local voice assistant to keep me on track.

@wcbdata @majorlinux

Also, since I'm autistic as well, I tend to talk my thoughts out loud to myself when I'm alone. Don't necessarily wanting all of that being sent "back home."

@wcbdata @angiebaby @majorlinux I migrated from a mix of Google home and Apple HomeKit to Home Assistant without a hiccup and didn't touch a single YAML file. Wasn't difficult at all. I have a mix of ZigBee, z-wave, and matter stuff.

I get that the yaml files are there if I need them to do some sick advanced stuff. I'm a YAML jockey by trade and felt zero need to touch any of them.

@Kancept @angiebaby @majorlinux That's good to hear! I was trying to get it set up a year or so ago, and there was almost nothing I could do with it out of the box, so to speak. Mostly Z-wave and some older stuff here. I may need to switch to ZigBee or Matter...

Does the voice recognition work okay yet? My primary use case for my Alexa is being able to just yell "Alexa set a timer for 10 minutes" while my hands are full cooking or "Alexa what's the weather?" While I'm grabbing a jacket so I know which jacket to grab.

@angiebaby @majorlinux

@angiebaby @majorlinux I'm looking at disconnecting all of our Google Home devices because Google is forcing everything to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini.

There's a speaker called the Home Assistant Voice Preview I'm looking at as a good alternative
